Hollow Shaft Planetary Gearbox or Hollow Rotary Table?
A search for a hollow shaft planetary gearbox produces products that look surprisingly different. Some are genuine gear units with an uninterrupted hollow output. Others are right-angle reducers, hollow rotary tables, cycloidal units or ordinary flange-output planetary gearboxes whose center recess only appears hollow in a front-view photograph.
That distinction matters before a machine builder sends an RFQ. A blind center recess cannot route a cable through the axis. A motor-side clamping opening is not a hollow output. A hollow rotary table may provide the large aperture and fixture support the machine needs, but it should not automatically be renamed a hollow-shaft gearbox.

What Is a Hollow Shaft Planetary Gearbox?
A true hollow shaft planetary gearbox has a hollow rotating output member rather than a conventional projecting solid output shaft. Depending on the design, a driven shaft may enter the bore, or cables, tubes and other services may pass through the complete axis. The manufacturer should state the bore geometry, connection method and usable opening in its dimensional documentation.
The word hollow must describe a functional internal passage or hollow output interface. It should not be assigned only because the front flange contains a circular pocket. The following features are often mistaken for a hollow shaft:
- a blind center recess used for locating or assembly;
- a threaded hole in the end of a solid output shaft;
- a circular pilot surrounded by output flange bolt holes;

How to Confirm Whether the Center Is Truly Hollow
Do not decide from one product photograph. Use the following evidence, in order of reliability.
1. Check the longitudinal section
A sectional drawing should show a continuous opening through the relevant axis. It also reveals whether the sun gear, input coupling, bearings, retaining parts or output carrier block the center. If the drawing stops at the front pocket, the product may have a hollow-looking flange without a usable passage.
2. Find the usable bore dimension
A genuine specification normally provides more than the visible opening diameter. Look for terms such as through-bore, hollow shaft diameter, clear aperture or usable bore. Confirm the smallest diameter through the complete assembly, not merely the largest diameter at the front face.
3. Inspect both ends of the physical product
Light should pass through a genuine open passage when no internal sleeve or cover is fitted. Inspecting the output side and motor side also prevents the input clamping hub from being mistaken for the output. 4. Ask what the opening is designed to do
A hollow shaft may receive a driven shaft and transmit torque through a key, spline or friction-locking element. A large rotary-table aperture may instead route cables, air lines, vacuum tubes or a stationary fixture component. Similar-looking openings can therefore have different functions and load paths.
5. Verify the output connection
If the supplier calls the unit a hollow shaft gear reducer, its drawing should define how torque enters the driven member. Relevant information can include bore tolerance, keyway dimensions, spline standard, shrink-disc data, clamping length and permissible shaft material. A picture and nominal ratio are not enough.

Can a Planetary Gearbox Have a Hollow Shaft?
Yes. Planetary gearing and a hollow output are not mechanically incompatible. Specialized products exist, but their construction is not necessarily the same as a conventional inline servo planetary gearbox.
In a standard inline servo reducer, the motor shaft, input coupling and sun gear are arranged on the central axis. That packaging makes a large uninterrupted passage difficult because the input components occupy the same space. Designers can solve the conflict by changing the architecture—for example, using an offset or right-angle input, an annular gear arrangement, a specially designed hollow planetary stage, or a combined planetary and bevel transmission.
Published industrial examples demonstrate the distinction. Why Google Images Shows Several Different Product Types

- a fixture bolted directly to the rotating output surface;
- rated axial, radial and overturning-moment support;
- repeatable servo-controlled indexing;
- a large clear aperture relative to the outside diameter;
- a compact integrated alternative to a separate gearbox, coupling, bearing housing and mounting table.
Do not reverse the terminology. A hollow rotary table is not automatically a hollow-shaft planetary gearbox. Its internal reduction method can vary by series and may use planetary, hypoid, harmonic, cycloidal or other gearing. If an individual Zhuochuang series contains a planetary stage, the precise description is hollow rotary table with planetary reduction or planetary-driven hollow rotary table—and only after the engineering structure has been confirmed.

What to Specify Before Requesting a Quotation
First describe the machine requirement without forcing a product name. The engineering team can then determine whether the application calls for a standard planetary reducer, a specialized hollow-output gearbox or a hollow rotary platform.
- Purpose of the opening: driven shaft, wiring, air tube, vacuum line, optical path or fixture component.
- Required clear aperture: include connectors, sleeves, bend radius and assembly clearance.
- Load arrangement: workpiece and fixture weight, center-of-gravity distance, axial load, radial load and overturning moment.
- Motion profile: rotation angle, cycle time, dwell, acceleration, peak torque and emergency-stop condition.
- Accuracy: positioning accuracy, repeatability, backlash and permissible settling time.
- Motor data: manufacturer, complete model number, rated speed, shaft diameter, pilot diameter and mounting pattern.
